January's
the perfect time to take stock of our lives and make some
resolutions for the coming year. So here goes. In 2004, we
resolve to:
- be
kind to ourselves
- drink
more Fair Trade coffee
- spend
more time biking (just as soon as we can!)
- drink
more Fair Trade coffee
- work
to live, not live to work
- drink
more Fair Trade coffee
OK,
so maybe our resolutions are a bit repetitive. But it's
worth repeating -- each time we drink a cup of Fair Trade
coffee, we make the world a little brighter for our farmer
partners and their families.
In
this issue of Fair Grounds, we introduce a new
Espresso Blend and offer some tips for home brewing. We've
also got a Staff Notes update, Community Caravan, a new
recipe, new trivia question, Fair Trade Fact and more.
Grab a steaming cup of Café Campesino and read on!

Another year has begun and with it comes a new face at Café
Campesino! Kurt Peterson has joined us and our importer,
Cooperative Coffees. He’s currently learning how to
roast coffee with Lee and will be taking over the position
of Assistant Roaster in March when Alex leaves us to go
roast coffee in the great Midwest. We’re very excited to
have Kurt on board for what we hope will be our greatest
year yet!

As a
coffee lover, I’ve got to say that I love a good cup
o’ joe. But lately, I’ve been thinking about ways to
jazz it up without adding too many extras. Enter espresso.
It had been a while since I’d had an espresso, and I
must say that after tasting it again, my love of coffee
was re-energized.
These
days, it’s becoming increasingly easy to go to a
professional barista and have an espresso drink made for
you. Almost every town has a small coffee shop on a
corner, allowing residents to indulge in lattes, mochas,
americanos, and shots in the dark to their hearts content.
But a new trend has been taking hold: making espresso at
home.
Espresso
at home can be tricky, especially when trying to recreate
the same flavor one gets at a coffee shop. But never fear,
with the right coffee and the right grind, you can have a
pleasant experience with your own espresso machine. ... more

With
the holidays having just ended, things are beginning to
get back to a normal pace. To start our new year off, Bill
will be taking off on January 23rd on a trip to Guatemala.
He will visit our current Guatemala coffee supplier
Apecaform in San Marcos. He will also visit two other
potential partners in Quetzaltenango. We look forward to
hearing about the Central American farmers upon his
return!

We're
giving away coffee!
Think
you know a lot about coffee? Then enter our Fair
Grounds Trivia Contest. Click
here for our question of the month. Entering is easy
and it's FUN!
With
the spell of cold weather, our judges decided to keep warm
by drinking a lot of hot Café Campesino Fair Trade
Coffee. Fortunately when Aimee LaMontague answered
last month's question correctly they also knew how much
caffeine their bodies were absorbing. Conratulations, Amiee,
you're our official winner.
