Even though April was an unusually hectic month, it turned out to be just what we needed — reminding us why we got into the business of Fair Trade in the first place. Thanks to an unforgettable visit by our friends at CAC Pangoa in Peru and Fondo Paez in Colombia (which you'll read about in this issue of Fair Grounds), we emerged from last month invigorated and more confident than ever that we and our producers share the same vision of a Fair Trade world. In this issue of Fair Grounds you'll also find a boatload of resources to help you celebrate this year's World Fair Trade Day on May 13th plus an updated Community Caravan. Combine these with a winning testimonial and a yummy cookie recipe and you've got a pretty darned good issue. Settle back with a steaming (or iced) cup or your favorite Café Campesino brew and enjoy...

As World Fair Trade Day approaches, we thought we'd take a moment to celebrate the recent visit by our friends from CAC Pangoa in Peru and Fondo Paez in Colombia. Their time with us was nothing short of remarkable, reminding us that relationships and dialogue lie at the heart of what drives Fair Trade. We are truly grateful to them for taking the time and investing the resources to travel so far to be with us. Their presence and active involvement in our outreach activities not only drew us closer as trading partners but also connected them directly with consumers on numerous occasions, which is what we are all about at Café Campesino!

World Fair Trade Day is an international celebration of the worldwide effort to create a global economy based on justice, dignity and sustainability. This year, on and around May 13th, Fair Trade supporters worldwide will celebrate the many ways that Fair Trade creates economic opportunity and development for people and communities most disadvantaged by conventional trade.

This year's theme is the unique role of Fair Trade organizations, which range from producer and consumer cooperatives, shops and collectives to advocacy groups, unions, producer groups, NGO's, and regional and national networks. World Fair Trade Day calls on all of us to celebrate Fair Trade organizations, buy more Fair Trade goods and encourage conventional companies to sell more Fair Trade products.

Here are ten ways to celebrate World Fair Day:

Whew...April's done and we're finally returning to a more evenly paced life...or are we?

On Friday April 28th through Sunday the 30th, Geoffrey was where he is every year...serving up Café Campesino (and a little Guayaki Yerba Mate to boot) and talking Fair Trade with the folks riding in this year's Bicycle Ride Across Georgia's Spring Tune-Up in Madison, Georgia. Thanks Geoffrey for your hard work and congrats to everyone who rode! Stay tuned for more info about this summer's BRAG, which runs from Dalton to Augusta from June 10th through the 17th...and yes, Geoffrey and crew will be there!

Saturday, May 6th: Geoffrey will be at Ten Thousand Villages in Atlanta to help our friends there celebrate Fair Trade Day. Between 11 am and 2 pm, Geoffrey will be serving tasty samples of Café Campesino coffee. Throughout the day, folks who visit the store can take Ten Thousand Villages' Fair Trade Facts quiz. Each answer is worth 5% off your purchase (up to 20% off!). For more information, visit their website and click on the World Fair Trade Day link.

Saturday, May 13th: Celebrate World Fair Trade Day with Café Campesino! Everyone (though we realize southwest Georgia may be a tad far for many of our customers and other friends) is invited to join Café Campesino for the 2006 World Fair Trade Day celebration on Saturday May 13th. From 10 am to 2 pm, Café Campesino will be at Rylander Park (across the street from Monroe's on West Lamar Street), offering free samples of our locally-roasted Fair Trade, organic coffees and providing information about our work as a 100% Fair Trade organic coffee company.

Joining in the celebration of this year's World Fair Trade Day at Rylander Park will be our very own Three Frontiers Trading Company, Americus' supplier of Fair Trade artisan handcrafts and furnishings from throughout the developing world. While we're serving up our fresh-roasted coffee, Three Frontiers will be holding its first annual Christmas in May sidewalk sale. Everything from toys to home decorations to world music cds will be available for folks who want to give the gift of Fair Trade.

The following is a summary of the events we have planned for World Fair Trade Day:

10:00 am – 2:00 pm: Rylander Park (across from the Rylander Theatre on West Lamar Street). Come browse Fair Trade crafts and goods for sale from Three Frontiers Trading Company, sample delicious fairly traded iced mocha and ice teas, and learn more about Fair Trade and how you can be a part of the action.

7:00 – 9:00 pm: Café Campesino, 725 Spring St. Join us for an international potluck supper followed by a screening of The Gods Must Be Crazy. Food, friends, and a fun evening with our neighbors...all in the name of Fair Trade. Everyone is asked to bring a favorite dish to share and lawn chair or blanket for a walk-in movie experience. For more information, contact May at 229-924-2468 (888-532-4728)

We received the following testimonial from David Halperin and liked it so much we picked it as this month's contest winner! Congratulations, David! Here's his winning contest entry:

-----

"Dear Café Campesino,

I received a bag of your Original Espresso coffee as a Christmas present, and I was blown away. After 40 years of coffee drinking, most of it outside the U.S., I'm pretty fussy, and I can say without hesitation that yours are among the most delicious and satisfying coffees I've ever tasted. I look forward to every cup. Please pass my congratulations and thanks to the growers and the roasters.

The fact that it's Fair Trade is a great bonus and I commend you for your principled approach to the whole endeavor. I've been spreading the word.

I have now ordered and received another couple of pounds – another of the Espresso and, for comparison, one of your Sumatran varieties and can see myself working my way gradually through a lot of your product line, just to compare the regional tastes.

Your online ordering and delivery processes were easy and efficient, and the website looks great and functions very well."

-----

If you're passionate about Café Campesino, show it! Send us:

— a photo showing your "Café Campesino Pride." This could be anything – a photo of yourself holding a bag of Café Campesino coffee, a photo showing that you took your Café Campesino on the road — use your imagination!
— a short written testimonial about how much you love us
— an original coffee poem or haiku (three lines, 5 syllables in the first, 7 in the second, 5 in the last)

Each month, we will choose one entry to appear in the following Fair Grounds newsletter. If we choose yours, you'll win a pound of your favorite Café Campesino coffee. Please send your entry to info@cafecampesino.com.

Contest ends: May 31st
